Posted on April 6th, 2010 by admin

what brand or kind of dog food should i get an american bulldog for the first year of its life…

i want a health dog and i don’t wanna feed him stuff that isn’t health

I highly recommend Orijen or Acana. They are made by a great company. Wellness, blue buffalo, taste of the wild are also good foods.
You can also check out http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews
All the 4-6 star foods are good, healthy foods.
Anything less than 4 star is not so great.

What is the most common health reason for putting dogs to sleep?

Posted on April 6th, 2010 by admin

We have been discussing this at the clinic. The most common reason owner’s dogs are euthanized in the clinic is hip dysplasia/orthopedic problems related to aging. A lot of people choose to euthanize when the dogs can’t get around to go potty or to go in and out well. What do you see in your areas?
Because there are leash laws here, we don’t see many dogs coming in hit by cars. Maybe 3-4 a year, but not a lot of them. I see orthopedic problems or age-related arthritis dogs coming in to see the vets at least 5 times a day.
Chalice mentioned aggression– There seems to be a lot more big dogs coming in from code enforcement to be euthanized lately. I think there has been a stricter crackdown on larger more dominant breeds. Just a couple of weeks ago a Rhodesian Ridgeback came in to be destroyed from code. That surprised be because the shelter could have sold him for a lot of money. But I don’t hear a lot of owners destroying animals for that, just code enforcement who won’t take a chance on putting them back on the streets.

Since I don’t work in a clinic, I can only give you my impression of the reasons I’ve heard, common to my exposure to dog owners.

The top three reasons for putting a dog down (de-compression, lethal gas, a bullet, lethal injection, breaking its neck, hanging it or drowning it)

3: Its in the best interest of the dog;
2: Some carastrophic event resulting in unmanageable pain and suffering; and
1: Its the most convenient choice given the dog-owner, who will invariably argue point 3.

I was going to expand on number 1, but you people know who you are … live with it.

Can people get sick from dogs or vice versa?

Posted on April 6th, 2010 by admin

My grandma has been sick lately with nausea and diarrhea. Today, our puppy had diarrhea and now she’s outside gagging, like she’s going to be sick.
I’ve been feeling a little nausous today too.

So, could my grandma have passed her sickness onto my puppy and then my puppy pass it on to me?

And can I get anything from her if she licks me on the mouth?

10pts.

Mild colds and flu are not transferable between species. There are only a very few true zoonoses. Parasites are the most common, such as scabies, roundworms and such. Rabies is zoonotic, but requires a transfer of saliva to blood. Most zoonoses are easily treated.

What are the symptoms of heart worms in dogs?

Posted on April 6th, 2010 by admin

My dog has been acting very weird lately and I don’t know what’s wrong with him. I suspect he has heart worms. But I’m not sure.

Since symptoms of dog heartworm vary considerably in different animals, a veterinarian is the only person qualified to give a proper diagnosis. Many dogs show the first visible indications of infection only after the disease has progressed to the point where treatment is no longer feasible. Active dogs generally show a tendency to tire easily. Shortness of breath or repeated coughing are usually positive signs of heartworm infection. Hunting dogs are often no longer able to keep up the rapid pace of the chase and frequently drop from exhaustion. Jaundice, convulsions, and disturbances of vision may occur in extreme cases. Emaciation often precedes death. All dogs with adult heartworms should show some microfilarial activity in the peripheral blood. A blood test made by a veterinarian is the only way to determine whether or not your dog has heartworm disease. Since microfilariae generally appear in the blood within 9 months after an infection occurs, mild cases of the disease can and should be detected and treated long before any symptoms are evident.

What are some possible treats for Maltese dogs?

Posted on April 6th, 2010 by admin

Preferably not hard to chew and small.
Hopefully an at-the-fridge treat too, like (if even possible) dices of cheese -.-"

Hi Isabel… you are getting some good suggestions. So I will give you advice in another direction. Not really treats, but something you can give your dog once a day is dog vitamins. Our dogs think they are treats while getting good nutrition. Our vet had recommended vitamins some time ago… but to his surprise, we were already giving them. Also… we pretty much spoil our pets… there are a number of easy-to-make doggie cookie recipes on the internet. You can make them anysize you want. Ours love them!!! And just a bit of advice to save your dog from serious stomach trouble …. no chocolate (EVER), nothing with onions, no potato skins… and absolutely no peanut butter. We found out the hard way… and our yorkie almost died… peanut butter introduces too much fat into their bloodstream which leads to bloody bowels and bloody vomitting…. Thanks for reading.

How do you socialize a dog that is scared f other dogs?

Posted on April 6th, 2010 by admin

We have a dog that is about 9 months old. she hasnt had much interaction with other dogs so we are trying to socialize her with my dogs which aregood with other dogs. What is the right way to introduce her to them? how can we help her trust other dogs?

Meet in a neutral place, don’t bring more than 1 dog to meet with her at a time.. Allow them to smell one another while on leads and see how it goes from there. It’s likely she’ll pick up from the other dog if they are good around dogs, that there is nothing to worry about. Keep them on leads and walk and let them socialize and if things seem really good, absolutely no signs of aggression at all, then let the 9 month old dog off her lead, allowing her to move around and see that nothing is going to happen. If things are good, let the other dog off. Try to do this in a yard that is fenced, a smaller area so that if there is a problem you are right there so you can stop things immediately. If dogs are going to fight, they tend to run and fight and you would have one heck of a time trying to catch up.

where it is possible to travel to without putting domestic pet dogs in Quarantine?

Posted on April 6th, 2010 by admin

I am traveling FROM the USA and want the least possible stress on the Animal. I know each country has their own issues.

Quite a few places. Ie. most of Europe. Do your research elsewhere, though.
BTW, should your dog travel in "cargo". Much more detailed work is needed on your part. It surely ain’t fun.
