Why do pet dogs like dads in families best?

Posted on May 29th, 2010 by admin

All of my friends have told met that their dogs like their dads best in the family. Why?

I’ve never known that to be the case. Dogs get most attached to the person who is their main care-giver; the person who feeds, grooms, walks, trains and plays with them the most. So the only way they’d get most attached to the dad is if that’s who spent the most time doing things with them.

Imagine a "vet" who doesn’t even know how to spell and actually expecting anyone at all to believe they’re a vet!

Can dogs have a small amount of decaffinated coffee in there cookies?

Posted on May 27th, 2010 by admin

I know caffeen is bad for dogs, but my dog loves the smell of coffee. She goes nuts when I come home with a cup of Dunkin!! I was wondering if it would be a problem if I baked her some plain dog cookies using a cup or so of decaffinated coffee in place of water? I guess the overall amount would be on cup of decaffinated coffee split up amongst 40 – 50 cookies. Thanks!

I can’t see how it would harm, other than increasing her likely hood of stealing your coffee..
dogs love cookies made with carob, and it is cheap, and so good for them too..You will find it in the health section of the grocer’s..

How do you train a dog to stop jumping up at other dogs ? and barking at them ?

Posted on May 24th, 2010 by admin

How do you train a dog to stop jumping up at other dogs ? We have a pug border cross.
Do you train it to sit and then tell it to sit when he sees another dog ? Or do you need to do something else ? Can you train him yourself or should you pay for dog training. My dog is around 18 months old and we have only just got him. Any help would be appreciated.

Get references for obedience trainers in your area from vets, feed and supply stores. Then attend classes in a group setting and listen to the trainer. Do your homework with your dog at a park or large parking lot where there are distractions.
Your dog is behaving inappropriately towards other dogs because he wasn’t properly socialized or trained. Now you must train him before you can trust him in an off-leash social setting.
Please do not listen to RDevi. I think that advice is terrible.

How many dogs are you allowed to have before you need a kennel license?

Posted on May 20th, 2010 by admin

I was recently talking about my life’s ambitions with my mum. I’m a big dog lover, and I told her I want to move out to a rural area and get about 5-10 dogs. A family member then remarked that if you want more than 4 dogs, you need to have a kennel license, and have to follow kennel regulations.

Is this true? All attempts to Google this topic came back with information about how dogs in kennels were required to be vaccinated.

This will be determined by your local government. Contact the animal welfare agency in your area to find out what’s allowed.

It’s not unusual for cities/towns to limit the number of dogs you can keep before you get special approval.

If dog food is bad for dogs than what should we feed them?

Posted on May 17th, 2010 by admin

I just ask a question on what food dogs can’t eat and there was a long list, practically almost everything.
I am planning to get a dog and want to know everything I can.

Many people decide to cook at home for their pets, which is being suggested by many vets. There has been an uproar about what dogs are allergic to.

I read an article about Golden Retrievers. It said that Goldens can be sensitive to corn, wheat and soy. Their food consists of wheat, so basically, many Golden Retrievers were having problems that could be easily avoided.

"People food" has turned out to be OK for dogs, but not too much. But of course, stay away from chocolate etc.

As I said, many people have turned to cooking for their dogs.

Best of Luck! :o )

How Do I Train My Dog to Be Under Control Around Other Dogs?

Posted on May 13th, 2010 by admin

I have a Jack Russell Terrier, just over a year old. I live in an apartment complex where a lot of people own dogs.

When I am walking my dog and he spots another dog, he wildly tries to pull me in that direction. If the dog is close, my dog lets out loud shrill screams and continues to try to pull me. It is almost impossible to control and its embarassing.

Other than that he is very well behaved for a JRT and he is real smart. Just a little wild in certain situations, this being the worst.

So what can I do to control this behavior?
he’s not aggressive in a mean way. He just is curious I think and wants to play. But he plays rough with other dogs like wrestling around and nipping (no intent to hurt). If I let him check out the other dog, They sniff, then start wrestling and the leashes get tangled up.

And then what happens? When he gets closer to the other dog, does he just say Hi and sniff ? Most JRT I’ve met are friendly. I’m not sure if you’re saying the problem is aggression, or you just don’t like his excited approach.

Okay, I just read your added comment. I think you need to arrange with other owners to let the dogs play together off-leash. Find some enclosed place where the dogs can be let loose and let them play. It looks rough to humans, but among dogs, it’s just play. There’s a lot of chasing and mock-biting. Choose dogs his own size. I don’t think your dog did anything wrong. I would not punish him.

What are some good dogs for slightly allergic people to have?

Posted on May 11th, 2010 by admin

My boyfriend is not actually allergic to dogs, but he’s said that some dogs have bothered him in the past. We want a dog really bad, preferably a larger dog, and I was wondering what the best hypoallergenic dogs are?

Any short haired dog.

Before commerical food was on the shelves, what did people feed their pet dogs?

Posted on May 9th, 2010 by admin

Pet dogs have been around a lot longer than commericial food.

Did people feed raw (consistent with the prey model/BARF model or just random raw meat/organs?)?
Table scraps?

Depended on the owner. City folks fed table scraps or cooked even. Some country folks fed table scraps and whatever the dog caught he ate. True country folk would take their dogs hunting and feed them the entrails and sinews and bones they didn’t want as well as what the dogs caught and table scraps. Some of the lines my dogs come from were eating fresh from the butcher daily. :)

How do I get my dog to be friendly with other dogs?

Posted on May 6th, 2010 by admin

I have a 2 year old miniature pinscher, and she is not nice around other dogs at all. When we first got her, she met another min pin the second day we had her, and that dog nipped at her. I think this is the source of her fear. We do not know anyone else with a dog, so it is very difficult to socialize her with other dogs. We would like to get another one, but are apprehensive becasue of how vicious she gets around dogs. Does anyone have any suggestions, or have been in the same position?

You need to watch "The Dog Whisperer" on the Discovery Channel. This guy goes around and shows people how to deal with problems with their dogs. I’ve seen your case a thousand times. Watch it!

What is the best way to teach dogs not to fight with neighbor dogs through the fence?

Posted on May 4th, 2010 by admin

My dogs jump at the fence and bark at the neighbors’ dogs, and their dogs do the same to outs, and it drives me crazy! It’s also dangerous. My dogs are small/medium (34 lbs and 14 lbs) but the neighbors have huge Goldern Retrievers and a really vicious-looking pit bull type terrier. My dogs are a whippet and a 14 lb jack russell-type mixed terrier. Shock collars are not an option for use on our dogs. Please help! thanks.

they need constant supervision.

have them on a leash at first,

then when they want to fight with the other dogs, correct them. it has to be consistent. do not praise them for barking, praise them for behaving.

then eventually u can have them free roam the yard, with out that problem.

good luck, my dogs had the same problem, and i did that. it worked.
