What is the most common health reason for putting dogs to sleep?

Posted on April 6th, 2010 by admin

We have been discussing this at the clinic. The most common reason owner’s dogs are euthanized in the clinic is hip dysplasia/orthopedic problems related to aging. A lot of people choose to euthanize when the dogs can’t get around to go potty or to go in and out well. What do you see in your areas?
Because there are leash laws here, we don’t see many dogs coming in hit by cars. Maybe 3-4 a year, but not a lot of them. I see orthopedic problems or age-related arthritis dogs coming in to see the vets at least 5 times a day.
Chalice mentioned aggression– There seems to be a lot more big dogs coming in from code enforcement to be euthanized lately. I think there has been a stricter crackdown on larger more dominant breeds. Just a couple of weeks ago a Rhodesian Ridgeback came in to be destroyed from code. That surprised be because the shelter could have sold him for a lot of money. But I don’t hear a lot of owners destroying animals for that, just code enforcement who won’t take a chance on putting them back on the streets.

Since I don’t work in a clinic, I can only give you my impression of the reasons I’ve heard, common to my exposure to dog owners.

The top three reasons for putting a dog down (de-compression, lethal gas, a bullet, lethal injection, breaking its neck, hanging it or drowning it)

3: Its in the best interest of the dog;
2: Some carastrophic event resulting in unmanageable pain and suffering; and
1: Its the most convenient choice given the dog-owner, who will invariably argue point 3.

I was going to expand on number 1, but you people know who you are … live with it.

What natural ingredients do you give your dogs to treat minor health issues(diarrhea, bad breath, etc)?

Posted on April 4th, 2010 by admin

I’ve recently got into making my own treats and would like to try making some that would be beneficial to their health, like adding mint and parsley for bad breath and pumpkin for diarrhea. What are some of your favorites?

It is good to have healthy treats for your dogs. great idea. Pumpkin has been hard to find around here this year, not sure why. I just give my dogs a little if they are out of sorts. That is when I can find it. It actually helps with diarrhea and also constipation. not sure how that works but it is supposed to. We don’t have time to make the treats ourselves but it is a great idea. Sounds like you are on the right track.

A bit of a unpleasent question about my dogs health?

Posted on April 2nd, 2010 by admin

I recently had my dog at kennels for a week, a place I had used often before. Since we got him home he seems to have a constant whitish gunk coming from the tip of his penis. Any ideas what this could be? He is an 18 month old chocolate lab.

my black labrador has that somtimes, its sperm/ smegma… it starts to appear now and then when they mature, its like a dog sign of adolescence

*edit*
why am i getting thumbs down, i have labs both have the same going on with them, also google will tell you what i said ^ some people are dumb… im being serious… not trolling

What are some common pug(dogs, puppies)health problemS?

Posted on March 29th, 2010 by admin

I mean, whats the best way to prevent?

Pugs are known to have mostly eye and respiratory problems. However, the best way to prevent this is to select a very good breeder.

If you properly care for a well-bred pug, so should be able to avoid many health problem associated with pugs. Keep him/her out of extreme temperatures and feed properly so they don’t gain too much weight. You must also pay careful attention to grooming…keep those little wrinkles clean!

Am I the only one who thinks coming here and asking serious health questions about dogs is rediculous?

Posted on March 27th, 2010 by admin

I can see asking about someones "OPINION" or "ADVICE"… but to come here and ask serious questions about dogs is just beyond my comprehension.
Jessayyy…

And that’s not eveen an answer.

Yeah of course it is. I just keep hoping and really believe that all of them are trolls. I just can’t see leaving a mutilated dog in the road after being hit by a car or a dog that is bleeding out all different kinds of orifices and their first thought is coming on a computer. I have a little more faith in the human race… (lol, though it doesn’t say a whole lot about them if they’re doing it for some kind of joke or for whatever reason they do it either)!!!
