My dog has all the symptoms of kennel cough, but has not been around other dogs at all. Is that possible?

Posted on March 7th, 2010 by admin

We are waiting for blood tests for this or Valley Fever. I am so scared. Is there anything I can do for her in the meanwhile, and or anything that would indicate one or the other?

Running a cool air vaporizer will help her be more comfortable.
Kennel cough is an airborne virus, so unless an infected dog has been breathing in the same area, it would be hard for her to catch it.

What signs/ symptoms do dogs have when they’re pregnant?

Posted on March 5th, 2010 by admin

Physical, emotionally, etc.
Besides good quality food, vitamins, and extra love, what other things can I give her, or do for her to keep her extra healthy and to have pups safely. I know a lot, I just want to do all that I can to help her along the way.

There is a great book I would recommend called "breeding dogs for dummies" it is a great resource. feed the mother not just a good quality food but be sure it is puppy food while pregnant and while nursing. There is extra vitamins they need. Also give her a scrambled egg a day (no milk though) for extra protein. Your vet can recommend vitamins for her and always check with the vet before giving vitamins for proper dosing and too much can cause complications and so can the wrong kinds. God luck to you.

What are the symptoms of Hypothyroidism in Dogs?

Posted on March 1st, 2010 by admin

Is it hereditary or do dogs just catch it somehow?
My dog Duke is always scratching at his legs and stomach and on his legs. His legs look patchy with dark skin and light skin. Same with his belly. I have looked up Hypothyroid for dogs before but he only had some of the symptoms.

Can he only have some of the symptoms and still have it?
He has the alopecia and hyper pigmentation on his legs and on his stomach.

Maybe he has just that! But how would I treat that?
Or it could be Red Mange which he had when he was a Puppy.

There is increasing evidence to suggest that hypothyroidism has a genetic component — many breed Parent Clubs are now recommending that their members get thyroid testing done on their breeding dogs.

In fact, for the past 5-6 years, I’ve been testing my dogs.

There is also evidence to suggest that environmental factors play a role; The chemicals in dog food, in our homes, pollution in the air, etc. all have an affect on the immune system, and it does have a long-term impact on the animal.

Symptoms — Losing coat in patches that don’t regrow, dry coat/skin, or very oily coat; dandruff; lethargic behavior; abnormal weight gain; sometimes even abnormally aggressive behavior can be a sign of a thyroid problem.

In my experience, you see it in the quality of the coat before anything else.

ADD: Yes, he could be hypothyroid without showing every symptom. The only way you are going to know for sure is to have his thyroid tested (blood draw).

Dry skin and alopecia can be a symptom of several things, including allergies, hormone issues, etc. The way you treat it really depends on the cause.

I think a blood panel at your vet may be in order!

What are the symptoms of epilepsy in dogs?

Posted on February 23rd, 2010 by admin

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone that has epilepsy in dogs could let me know if my dog has it.

It was in the middle of the night, my dog awoke to crawl under the covers and when doing it I heard almost like a cough. Then he just fell motionless and like dead weight. It was like he had died. It took about 5-10 sec before he awoke and was like nothing had happened. I am wondering if your dog has ever experienced this and would like to let me know. He is currently 9 months old.
He is a Chinese Crested

The one more major symptom would be seizures. Seizures can manifest in different ways, from looking dazed and confused, to a huge grand mall seizure where they flop around uncontrollably. If he did just "fall unconscious" I would have him checked out, though he might have just been sleeping. Keep a good eye on him. Watch him through the day, if he has bouts of confusion, staring, or his eyes start shaking or wiggling back and forth and he seems dazed. He could be having a series of very small seizures, and that can be controlled pretty well with medications.

TOO ADD: Is he a little dog breed? like a tiny one? Chi or Poodle or something? The coughing and collapsing can be caused by a genetic condition called Collapsed Trachea, which is a common ailment, its usually not severe to cause too many problems but some may have it so bad that it cuts of oxygen for a short time and he might have just, as you said, have passed out for a short time because of it. Either way its time for a good check up. Insist that they look him over thoroughly.

No websites, sorry. Why not take your dog to the vet??

If your dog is "very ill" why is she not at the vet??? Poor thing! Vomiting, lack of appetite, and lethargy are not syptoms to take lightly!

ADD: There has to be an emergency clinic open in your area or within relative driving distance. Open the phone book and start calling. Your dog needs the vet.
