What are some symptoms of carsickness for dogs?

Posted on March 19th, 2010 by admin

My husband and I have a 8 wk. old Maltese and Shih Tzu mix and we take him with us for rides in the car. Today was his 6th time and also his longest time spent in the car. Next thing we know, he starts to dry heave and eventually vomits. He has no fever and he drinks his water to help him vomit more, but I just want to make sure its not parvo. The vet isn’t open untill morning. Please help.

i would be willing to bet it’s just car sickness. Parvo is a virus that attacks the intestinal system and severe diarrhea is always a symptom. The reason he drinks water after he vomits is the same reason you would . He like the taste of the water better than the vomit taste. Even if a dog is used to riding in a car they can still get motion sickness after an extended period time riding in a car. Especially if you feed them while there riding or just before the ride. Bur water should always be kept accessible to your dog while riding in the car. When taking your dog for an extended car ride you should make frequent stops along the way. Because the dog needs a break from the car in the same way you would.i.e To potty, Stretch their legs and to get some fresh air. This will also help a great deal with the car sickness issue for the dog. But if the vomiting continues even after the car ride has ended you should take him to the vet to be checked out.

What are the symptoms of heartworms in dogs?

Posted on March 17th, 2010 by admin

My dog is really skinny and he coughs all the time and shivers. He’s 8 or 9 yrs and I think he might have heartworms.

Coughing can be a symptom. Unfortunately, its usually too late to treat by the time symptoms appear. Still, take your dog to the vet, they may be able to help. It may be something other than heartworms. You should get a heartworm test every year and use a preventative monthly. It isn’t expensive, way less expensive than trying to treat heartworms and will save your dog a lot of suffering and misery.

What are some symptoms of getting my dogs spayed?

Posted on March 15th, 2010 by admin

I will be getting my dog spayed Monday and I was a little nervous about it. I heard things like, she will get fat and she will calm down. Have you guys heard these things? Are there any others I should know about getting her spayed?

They give you a care sheet when you pick your dog it will have things like no running and jumping and don’t get the stitches wet. Make sure you know how to contact your vet/vet tech after hours. Your dog may not eat much or potty much the first day, but should be back to normal after that. She shouldn’t get fat, it takes 10 days before the stitches come out and then you should be able to continue walks and stuff. Your vet/vet tech should go over this with you.

are there symptoms for dogs AFTER they recieve the rabies vaccination?

Posted on March 13th, 2010 by admin

Like any after affects? Because my dog’s behavior changed ever since I got him his shot and he keeps whining whenever I put him in his cage… he’s never whined like that before..
bUT i dont have to take him to the hospital or anything right??? thanks a lot for your information–both of you

Possible side effects: Soreness at the injection site, bump at the injection site, stiffness in the joints located near the injection site (of course there are always vaccine reactions, but those symptoms include vomiting, fever, swelling, diarrhea, lethargy, etc.).

My best guess is your dog is probably sore in the area the vaccine was given. I would keep a close eye on him… if you are really concerned or he starts with secondary symptoms, you can make a phone call to your vet. No need to worry at this point.

ADD: No need to rush him off to the vet, OK?

What are the symptoms of thyroid problems in dogs?

Posted on March 11th, 2010 by admin

My Schnauzer is shedding quite a bit and he’s hyperactive. I’ve read that dogs with a thyroid problem can be lethargic or hyperactive but I’d like to hear from someone who has experience with this.

90% of thyroid problems in dogs are caused by a hypoactive thyroid, meaning that the thyroid gland is under functioning. Symptoms that the owner usually notices is that the dog is usually overweight (and not just slightly), lethargic, exercise intolerance and usually has patchy hair or the hair coat isn’t as thick as it used to be. To diagnose this, it’s a very simple blood test and the condition is easily controlled by daily oral medication, but has to be monitored by more blood testing to find the right dosing of the medication. Easiest thing to do for your little guy is to just call your Vet for an exam and ask for some blood work! Best of luck.

what are the symptoms of worms for dogs?

Posted on March 9th, 2010 by admin

im extremely worried of my puppy getting worms and by worms i mean the bad kinda, not the kind they are supposed to have.
what are some symptoms of her having them?
if she has them, what should i do?
what can they effect on her?
and for how long?

Dull coat
Weight loss
Appetite loss
Pot-bellied appearance
Coughing
Low energy level
Diarrhea
Vomiting

also if she has them take her to the vet.

If they get on your dog then it could get a serious medical condition but also it might get a high chance of dieing.

It would last for long if it does affect her.

Also to prevent it you can go to the vet and pet store and ask for worm medicine you give it to your dog once a month and that will shorten the chance for your dog of getting heart worms.

Also if you give it the medicine the chance of your dog getting heart worms would be 7%
