Why do dogs jump up onto something when we pat on the object?

Posted on April 16th, 2010 by admin

I’ve never understood this- why do some dogs automatically think to jump up onto something when a human pats their hand on the object?

Why do people automatically assume the dog will do it (some dogs do not)? Why do we "pat the seat" to entice a dog to sit in a certain spot?

I’m guessing it is learned. Dogs are good with signals as commands (some better than others,) so they recognize that signal as the okay to join you. When it is time to go to sleep, my dogs have to wait until I give permission to get on the bed. One responds to the verbal command, the other one needs to see the signal (me, patting the bed,) before he will jump up.

How do you train a dog to not be jealous of other dogs around her owner?

Posted on April 14th, 2010 by admin

My golden retreiver will not allow other dogs to come near me (except my other golden) in the dog park and outside. I can not even go up to them anymore! I try time outs, but it is very hard to get her attention and the other dogs’ owners freak out thinking that she will hurt their dog. She plays fine (submissively) with any dog as long as they don’t get close to me. Any ideas?

I have seen that problem before and what I have seen done for it is you go to like Petsmart and there is this one collar that is double and if you watch The Dog Whisperer w/ Ceaser Milan he is WONDERFUL its on the National Goegraphic Channel I believe he deals w/ dogs that have that problem and you can see the collar I am talking about on there too.

What dogs are good for people with allergies to dander?

Posted on April 12th, 2010 by admin

My mom has allergies to dog & cat dander, but we want to get a dog. What dogs would be okay to get?

Poodles, bichon frise, shih tzu, lhasa apsos and…that hairless dog—those are all "nonshed/non dander" dogs.
There might be one more, I’m not sure.
I have a shih tzu and he does NOT shed!

Fighting dogs is a hot issue. Is it equally cruel to hunt animals for sport?

Posted on April 10th, 2010 by admin

Dog fighting is becoming more of a hot button issue. Dogs are virtually innocent creatures that should serve as a companion. Oftentimes they are used as an assistant in the recreational killing of other animals. Fighting dogs and roosters is no longer an acceptable form of entertainment. Why do people accept the killing of game for purposes other than food and warmth? How can a group of armed men chasing animals be considered a sport?

Hunters eat their kills or find someone who will.

Yes, they take the head as a trophy, but you don’t eat the head anyway.

Also, game animals have EVOLVED to be hunted. If they aren’t culled, they over breed and kill eco-systems.

Deer are responsible for more human death than Moutain Lions and bears COMBINED!
Don’t feel sorry for them, really, their fine.

Fighting dogs are tortured.
They are beaten, starved, and forced to tear apart family members.
Gosh, that sounds nice doesn’t it?

What happens when female dogs are in heat?

Posted on April 8th, 2010 by admin

My dog is running out lose right now with other dogs in a pack. He cried all day yesterday to go run lose, and he got lose just a while ago. My uncle said most likely theres a female dog around that’s in heat. He was telling me they’ll fight over the girl dog. Should I be worried that my dog is in danger?

I wouldn’t necessaraly be worried…depends on the dog bread of your dog and the dogs around. Our male dog always howels when the neighbor dog was in heat and would try to get lose and go over there…..

How do you socialize a dog that is scared f other dogs?

Posted on April 6th, 2010 by admin

We have a dog that is about 9 months old. she hasnt had much interaction with other dogs so we are trying to socialize her with my dogs which aregood with other dogs. What is the right way to introduce her to them? how can we help her trust other dogs?

Meet in a neutral place, don’t bring more than 1 dog to meet with her at a time.. Allow them to smell one another while on leads and see how it goes from there. It’s likely she’ll pick up from the other dog if they are good around dogs, that there is nothing to worry about. Keep them on leads and walk and let them socialize and if things seem really good, absolutely no signs of aggression at all, then let the 9 month old dog off her lead, allowing her to move around and see that nothing is going to happen. If things are good, let the other dog off. Try to do this in a yard that is fenced, a smaller area so that if there is a problem you are right there so you can stop things immediately. If dogs are going to fight, they tend to run and fight and you would have one heck of a time trying to catch up.
