Im going to get a maltese dog and i need to know what to get for them in the first year {essential supplies} and how much it will cost. And the good brands and thing like healthy food. And also how much Maltese dogs cost because i don’t want to get the really cheap one with health problems but i don’t want to get a highly over priced one.
Thank you! :d
Thanks a lot its really helpful

you will have to take them to a groomer every 4 -8 weeks and that could be 45 + food could be 10-15 for a 4 lb bag and they will go through a bag a month approx …you have to get them spayed or neutered 150.00 -200.00 vaccinations 55.00 including office visit x 4 visits heart worm test 20.00 and the heartguard medicine itself is 40.00 for a years worth and frontline flea medicine could be 10-15 a month if you live in an area with fleas

While 12-14 years is the average lifespan of a Maltese, some live less, some live more. It’s very important that your dog is fed a natural high quality nutrient dense kibble, along with some healthy wet food. And proper dental care is of the up most importance. Too often I meet small breed pet owners whose dogs are missing several, or almost all of their teeth. By age 3, 75% of all dogs develop periodontal disease. Some other area of concerns can be the knees, thyroid, and eyes. I recommend regular vet check ups, and lots of love!

My friend has a 5-year old Maltese dog and she is thinking of getting another dog, particularly another breed, Lab is the first on her list and Shih Tzu is the second. Do you think the Maltese will like the idea of a new playmate?

Yes, they are..
Malteses were usually playful, lively and protective. So, it would likely be like what you want.
My friend also had one and when she brought a new dog, they liked each other.

Hope that it will be the same case for you..

You get them each a crate and start w/ crate training, but 4 at once will be VERY hard. You can google for crate training info, lots of it out there. You have to be religious about it and either be watching the dog when it’s in the house or have it in the crate. With that many it would be best to train maybe 2 at a time or see if you can get someone else to train the other 2 at the same time.

If they have peed all over the house & you have carpets, get them professionally cleaned so there is no scent to attract them back.

I am considering getting a Maltese puppy or a similar cross. Does anyone have any experience with this breed? What are they like? Does anyone know of any nice crosses that are similar? How much did they cost etc? Plus what names did you give them?
Thank you for your help xx

The Maltese is a very nice breed, usually friendly. Some issues are grooming (unless it is a pet because it can be kept in a puppy cut in that case), being babied so that they develop "Small Dog Syndrome", and overbreeding by backyard breeders and puppymills (resulting in health and temperament issues). Don’t get a "designer breed" mutt. If you saw a mutt like that 10 years ago, you wouldn’t breed it on purpose, pay more money for it, or put if on a pedestal would you? You have to find a serious breeder that shows their dogs because they usually know what they are doing. Make sure you can meet the parents (that are champion pointed by the AKC), see the pedigree, have registration, see the OFA certified xrays, see the results of health testing, see where the dogs are kept, can ask the breeder anything, and know that the breeder will choose which pup is best for you (since they have been with the dog since day 1 and know which personality goes with which pup for which family situation). DO NOT go to a pet store or some random backyard breeding neighbor who happened to let their dogs breed, even if you want "just a pet." If it is a really nicely bred dog with all of the requirements, a pet quality dog should be no less than $800, but it depends on the breeder. DO NOT go to the places advertising "teacup" or "mini" or "toy" or "luxury" or "imperial" Maltese puppies, the dog should be bred to the AKC standard and not have to use puppymill terms. The name depends on the personality of the dog, really.

I am looking for a small dog who can be alone for 8 hours a day and not suffer from separation anxiety. I know all dogs need human company and cannot be left alone for that long, but I work full time and I really want a dog. So can anyone suggest a small dog breed that is more independent? Thank you so much!

It depends more on the temperament of the dog than it does the breed. I have two Maltese who are home alone for about 8.5 hours while I am at work and they do just fine. I crate trained them as puppies and made sure they were accustomed to me coming and going.

My friend is getting a puppy soon and she wants a Maltese She has a 1 year old niece and an 8 year old niece. She has asked me to train it so any information on obedience, energy and friendliness would be greatly appreciated.

Good answers…no puppy mill, BYB’s or pet store pups (the pet stores sell mill dogs..or brokered dogs…which are mill dogs). You do NOT want to take on a puppy that may have social or medical issues UNLESS you know what you are getting into and are doing a rescue. I myself have adopted 2 mill rescues…they required very intense medical treatment and social intervention, but with appropriate fostering and care they are now doing well, and only one has an ongoing medical condition secondary to its birth line.
As for the question of will this be a good pet…it is all about what the family puts into it, is what they will get out of it. I would recommend reading My Smart Puppy by Brian Kilcommons. Very informative and will be a good resource throughout training. It will tell you the basics of what you need to know for not just obedience training but introducing your puppy to the world around him so that he knows who he is and what his place is. You must remember that the puppy you get will be a blank slate…he will know NOTHING but his own instincts and it is up to you to show him how to get along in the world.
Maltese are generally trainable, have a medium to high energy level depending on the dog. They are as a breed..fairly friendly and social…but that is really up to the owner. My personal experiece with friends who owned Maltese is not great. They were overindulged, undisciplined yappers who bit me on more than one occasion. But I know that is my friends’ fault…it is the result of pampering and not demanding good manners from your pet.
Good manners is entirely up to you. Start from day one to raise your pup to be calm, to not jump, to approach others when asked, to not beg…and that is the dog you will get…a well behaved sweetie that is welcomed everywhere. Maltese are great for trick training…and that will be fun for the family.
The family should ALL be involved in the raising of the pup. Including the kids. The 8 year old is old enough for some supervised responsibility. Even the one year old needs to be taught respect for the animal…and not to treat it as a toy. Of course all interaction should be supervised and you should NEVER leave your dog alone with the baby. Even if it is a small dog, it is still an animal.
A Maltese is a good choice for a family pet, as long as you raise it within these parameters. And be sure not to let the pup choose ONE family member to call "master"…a family pet should belong to the entire family and be obedient to all.
Good luck and have fun!

If you are not talking about his bulbus glands which are located at the base of his penis, and you are talking about his actual scrotum sacks, then you shouldn’t feel extra pea size lumps. Might be a good idea to get him checked out.

I would get the brownish black spot checked anyway, although if it has been there for years it is probably nothing, although dogs can get melnoma’s like us.

A maltese dog is very hairy. They can live in India, but you should shave the dogs hair a lot because the breed has long hair, that is not suitable for the hot climate. Here is a link for you to learn all about them!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maltese_(dog)
