How big do Maltese dogs get?

Posted on November 14th, 2010 by admin

I am wanting to get a Maltese dog but I would first like to know how big they get. Do they usually stay small like a Yorki? or Are they bigger? Please if you own a Maltese or know about these kinds of dogs could you let me know.

I have a Maltese and she is full grown at three years old and 8.o lbs. She is quite slim. While she is slightly large for show-dog standards, she is very delicately boned, eight inches to the shoulder tall. I think that a Maltese who weighs more is probably overweight because my little girl is on the tall side for her breed, so I doubt you would find one bigger, only fatter.

Is it better to own two maltese dogs versus one?

Posted on November 8th, 2010 by admin

I have a absolutely adorable 6 month old maltese baby boy named Okie. My husband and I decided that we should purchase another one to keep him company. The new puppy is set to arrive next week. I am however a little concerned with having two puppies. Is it better to have two ? Any advice would be helpful. = )

I own two Maltese that were littermates and have been together since birth. I don’t regret getting two puppies at one time but there are some things to consider.

Training – it is hard to train two puppies at one time. Not only is it harder to maintain their attention but consider if you are teaching sit and one does and the other doesn’t. It is hard for them to recognize who you are praising and who you are correcting. House breaking is also twice as much work.

I would recommed you wait until Okie is a little further along in his training but if you get another Maltese while he is still young and you have properly socialized him then you shouldn’t need worry about him not getting along with another dog.

If you do go ahead and get another puppy now jsut make sure to spend time with them on an individual basis to promote bonding and training.

My 2 small Maltese Dogs each got multiple teeth pulled out for their 2nd time, should they remain healthy?

Posted on October 31st, 2010 by admin

It worries me because they both lost many teeth before, while going into the Veterinarian to get their teeth cleaned (some pulled out), and now even more have been removed. I need someone with dog knowledge or a Maltese owner to answer this question if possible. I just hope my dogs are still as safe and healthy as they were before.

What are you feeding them? Small dogs tend to be prone to early tooth loss. Sometimes it’s genetic, sometimes it’s because of a diet of nothing but soft, wet food. If your dogs can still chew solid kibble, feed that and nothing else. Provide raw bones or busy bones or other such chew toys for them to play with, and consider brushing their teeth at least once a week, if not once a day.

Your dogs will be fine if you take care of their teeth. Be sure their overall health is good. They can lose all their teeth and still be fine, they’d just obviously be in a soft diet.

How do i help my Maltese dogs to mate?

Posted on October 29th, 2010 by admin

My family has two maltese dogs, one male and one female. The male, is 4 years old while the female is 1year and two months. We are planning to breed because the female has recently go her period but the male is, well a virgin and does not know how to do it, he just seems to hump her side or tail. How do we help him impregante her?
Ps we have a family friend who has been breed dogs, so she might help us with the delivery or we will hire a vet.

She is too young to be bred. She needs to be at least 2 years before being bred.

Not that I am condoning it then, I’m just telling you that now, for her heath, is too young. It would be like allowing a 12 year old to get pregnant. She CAN but should she? No, for many reasons.

However great you think your dogs are, they both most likely are not good examples of the breed and therefore have no business being bred. I’m not against breeding, I am against pointless breeding by people who are not knowledgeable. Let you pets be happy pets. They don’t need or want to have puppies.

Someone told me that Maltese dogs where originally breed for food?

Posted on July 26th, 2010 by admin

I have had friend with one as a pet and they are one of the most friendly dog that I have meet.

I have no idea what breed of dog the people of Malta ate when they ran out of food during the German blockade of WW I I, but they were eating dogs and horses too.
And it is no secret that the Chinese have been using animals that we consider pets as food for centuries. I honestly do not have a problem with that, and it’s really none of my business anyway. We eat cows and in certain parts of the world that makes us blasphemers.

Does anyone know anything about small dogs like a maltese or a lapso apso?

Posted on July 12th, 2010 by admin

I’m in college and I’m a huge animal lover. I have two cats living with me who were used to having 2 big dogs running around the house. Now that I’ve moved into an apartment I can only have small dogs. I really want to get a small dog and I know my cats would love it. I want either a maltese or a lapso apso but I want to know some advantages and disadvantages of both. I’m trying to avoid a lot of barking or biting on your ankles. I need help choosing!!!!

ankle bitters are usually herding dogs. I would really go to websites of the breeds you are interested if you are set on them…and ask them there. they can better answer those questions.

You will have a bigger cluster of people to answer who really know those breeds…

I might add..a rescue site…where you might find a dog o those breeds who is already used to and loves cats…

good luck!

Do maltese full grown dogs grow to be big? Does anyone know for sure?

Posted on July 9th, 2010 by admin

I looked on many sites regarding their size, and i cant find a sure answer. im looking to buy a very small dog, and the maltese seemed the cutest and best choice but im scared it will grow too big. let me know what you think.

The Maltese should be between 9-10 inches tall and weigh between 4-7 pounds when fully grown.

is artemis meat food good for little chiihuahuas and maltese dogs?

Posted on July 7th, 2010 by admin

i heard artemis is good but i don’t know about the meat food..

For either of those dogs I would probably go with Artemis Fresh Mix – Small Breed Adult.

It is a really good food!

The first five ingredients in this food are all named meat products. The first two of these are meat inclusive of water content (about 80%) and once that is removed it is likely that these ingredients would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list (ingredients are listed in order of weight). However, since they are followed by three meat meal ingredients, you can have very high confidence in the level of meat content of the food. There is a further meat ingredient 11th on the list. The latter of these this is too far down to make up a substantive portion of the food. That is salmon, a source of Omega 6 and Omega 3 essential fatty acids.

The main grains are rice and barley. Both are whole grains and good quality sources of carbohydrates and additional protein. Oatmeal is a further good quality grain in the food. The food contains a range of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole eggs. Flax seed is a good quality source of Omega 6 and Omega 3 essential fatty acids, and the food contains a range of pro-biotics.

Overall, this is a very good quality food with a good amount of meat and that uses high quality ingredients throughout. The food contains no fillers, no grain fragments, or other nasties that commonly cause problems for dogs.

are Maltese dogs a good breed if you want a dog who is calm and gentle ?

Posted on June 29th, 2010 by admin

easy to take care of . any input would be good. im looking for a teacup. i dont want the 7 pounder ones

There is no such thing as a teacup.. They are runts, bred to runts, bred to runts.. Taking nothing else .. health, temperament or anything else into consideration. Dogs bred for one thing only are sickly, diseased, dogs with health problems, horrible structure and die very very young.. Do not support backyard breeding and puppymills..
