Why is it that human food makes my dogs sick?

Always whenever my mom gives my dogs human food they get sick. I’ve told my mom to stop giving them soup, hamburgers, pizza, bologna, rice, and vegetables, but she just won’t listen. She said because the veggies and rice are in some dogs food, the dogs can eat it. But I told her since they’re carnivores, that they can’t eat the same stuff we eat. But the weird thing is, they let out hair… and it’s green?

All dogs are supposed to eat just plain nutritious dog food. Human food is basically like candy for children once they eat they wont stop begging for more. Human food has a lot of harsh factors that dogs are not used to and it can cause them to become severely sick. Just like human food a lot of dog food you buy at the regular stores are even worse for dogs. If you look on the ingredients of almost every store brand dog food you will see "Corn" or "Puree" in the first 6 ingredients. Which are both reasons your dog may poop a lott or be hungry all the time. Try telling your mother than only rice or whole wheat is the only thing you can give your dog, and go to your local pet store and ask them what kind of dog food they have doesn’t have corn in the first six ingredients. It may be expensive to do this but it is the same way for children You wouldn’t give your newborn a hamburger to eat would you?

Do people honestly not realise that sick dogs need vet care?

I’m astounded at the number of questions on this board asking unqualified strangers what to do when their dog is showing serious signs of illness. While I can understand asking for advice if nothing is seriously wrong, when a dog is obviously sick what do people expect strangers on the internet to be able to do?

Why own a dog if you know you are/will be unable to afford even basic vet care?

I can understand them wanting advice. People’s financial situation changes and you can’t take it out on them for finances changing. However in saying that if their dog is bleeding or something serious like that I do not understand why they waste their time on here but if it’s something like blood in the poo I can understand.

As long as the dog gets the help it needs in the end

What is it inside the chocolate that makes the dogs sick? Why and how does it make them sick?

Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic. When affected by an overdose of chocolate, a dog can become excited and hyperactive. Due to the diuretic effect, it may pass large volumes of urine and it will be unusually thirsty. Vomiting and diarrhea are also common. The effect of theobromine on the heart is the most dangerous effect. Theobromine will either increase the dog’s heart rate or may cause the heart to beat irregularly. Death is quite possible, especially with exercise. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include: vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, hyperactivity, irregular heartbeat and seizures.

Larger quantities of chocolate can poison or even kill a medium or large dog. An ounce or two of chocolate may not seem like much but it can be lethal to a small dog that weighs 10 lbs. or less. After their dog has eaten a large quantity of chocolate, many pet owners assume their pet is unaffected. However, the signs of sickness may not be seen for several hours, with death following within twenty-four hours.

Cocoa powder and cooking chocolate are the most toxic forms. These forms of chocolate contain ten times more theobromine than milk chocolate. Even licking a substantial part of the chocolate icing from a cake can make a dog sick. The next most dangerous forms are semi-sweet chocolate and dark chocolate, with milk chocolate being the least dangerous. A dog needs to eat more than a 250gm block of milk chocolate, however the high amount of fat found in milk chocolate can lead to an attack of pancreatitis.

1 ounce per pound of body weight (2 ounces per kg of body weight) for milk chocolate.
1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight ( 1 ounce per 1.5 kg body weight) for semi-sweet chocolate
1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight ( 1 ounce per 4 kg) for baker’s chocolate.

During many holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s Day, Easter and Halloween, chocolate is often accessible to curious dogs, and in some cases, people unwittingly poison their dogs by offering them chocolate as a treat or letting them lick a frosting bowl.

My dog started showing signs of Parvo Monday so we took him to the vet the same day. He stayed at the vets on IV’s for a couple of days. He is back home now (Friday) and still sick. How long at one time does a sick dog sleep? Should I wake him to make him drink?

never wake a dog up even if it sick. don’t want to be ridiculous but he could bite.

It depends. Many viruses can indeed live on surfaces. So say someone sneezed into their hand. They then pet the dog with that hand. The dog then comes over to you. You pet the dog in the same spot. The virus travels from the dog to your hand. You touch your mouth or nose with the hand. Wah-lah…you now have the virus.

It depends upon what virus we are talking about. Some die quickly while not in a host, others can live for years on a hard surface or in soil, etc. ParvoVirus in dogs (yes, I am fully aware that humans cannot catch it…using it as an example) can live in the soil outdoors for years.

The dogs itself generally cannot catch a human virus, but he can certainly transfer it.

EDIT: Many viruses are indeed airborne despite what the other poster says. Airborne transmission happens when the bacteria or virus travel on respiratory droplets or dust.

Are the dogs getting sick because the dog owners are not mixing the new formula with the old formula, or is it because the new formula itself is bad?

A lot of people is complaining about the new formula. It’s sure that it is worse than the old one. Swich to another dog food. (However the best is if u are cooking for the dog: rice, vegetables and meat)

I am so worried about my babies! They might get sick because of me. I heard that a flu is an infectious disease of birds and mammal. Of course dog is a mammal and maybe my dogs might get infected! Im scared Please somebody tell me if my dogs are going to get sick too?
Nobody else can take care of them but me so they have to stay in my room.(and i am very very sick!)

It is very unlikely that your dogs will get the flu from you. In order for a virus to cross species it requires a mutation and it is very unlikely.

Drink plenty of fluids, and get lots of rest. The dogs will cuddle next to you and take care of you.
