What are some good dog breeds that don’t naturally hunt small animals?

Posted on April 16th, 2010 by admin

I know the best way for a dog to be accustomed to having a small animal [that is caged] in the house like a guinea pig, is to slowly introduce them to eachother when the dogs a puppy [supervised of course, duh!]. Are there any particular breeds that have strong hunting instincts that I should stay away from?

yorkies are awesome with babys and other animals

Sporting and terrier group for sure. Possibly some sight hounds. It’s their complete instinct to go after the small fuzy thing.

I’d say almost anything from the Toy group. They’ve been bred for centuries as lap dogs (Pekinese were used to warm there owners feet!)

Stay away from Jack Russells. They have very strong hunting instincts and will try to take a guinea pig even when under supervision.

Smaller toy breeds, such as shih-tzu.
My shih tzu was EXCELLENT with my rabbit, bird, fish, frog, etc.

a lot of the smaller breeds want smaller animals. I would stay away from terriers and Hounds of course. I would try the Working Dogs, Non-Sporting Dogs, Sporting Dogs, etc etc.
Terriers tend to be a bit nippy anyways, but it all matters on the dog, so don’t judge based on the breed!
The reason i say terriors, is because they were meant to kill or hunt down rats and other rodents.

(in my source read the first paragraph, its not long i swear)
