What would happen if I shipped a dog without a health certificate?

Posted on March 27th, 2010 by admin

I’m having a friend check my dog as checked baggage. Its a domestic flight from ANC to DTW (michigan). She doesn’t have time to get a health certificate and Delta does not require papers for domestic pets flying as checked baggage. What happens if they want papers when she gets into Detroit and she doesn’t have any? Will they want papers? Can I get a MI vet to declare health once he’s already flown in? I called detroit metro but they have not returned my call.
what fee? can i just get papers once hes here?

They won’t let you put the dog on the plane without a health certificate. It doesn’t take long just a vet appointment.

You don’t need a health certificate for animals if they are flown within the usa. If you were flying the day to another country, yes definitely

Good chance they will quarantine the dog and fine you. Health certificates are as much for the dogs safety while in route as it is to protect the animals in the area that you are traveling to. Health certificates are technically required any time that you cross state lines, whether is is by air or car. Health certificates are rarely enforced for dogs that travel by car unless they are hunting dogs hunting on federal grounds.

"A health certificate is required when shipping your pet as air cargo. While Delta does not require a health certificate for carried-on or checked pets, upon arrival, the certificate may be required by the state. For clarification, please call your veterinarian or see the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Veterinary Services."

would say they would keep it until it passed all their checks when it arrives. might see your dog again in about six months with a heavy bill with it.

It doesn’t take very long to get the health certificate filled out. Just make an appointment with the dogs vet, they’ll do a physical exam on her and make sure she’s up to date on her rabies vaccine, they’ll fill out a paper and send you on your way.

They will not want anything. I fly with dogs several times a month….Delta and Northwest. They do not require a health certificate in the U.S. You MAY have a problem with temperatures. Delta, although they don’t require the health certificate, has been getting all "gung ho" about "Temperature acclimation". At check in, they may ask for a "certification of acclimation". Basically, it is a section on the health certificate where it says "this dog is acclimated to temperatures below 45 degrees". Everyone at the airport knows me…and knows better than to argue about rules & regs for flying with dogs…I’ve done it far longer than any of them. States are switching to "Federal" health certificates. On the Federal certificate, the "certification of acclimation" is on the "OWNERS" section of the certificate…NOT the VET side. Therefore, "IF" they ask, I just explain that, and tell them that I’ll certify it "right now"….no vet is needed.
