Will there still be major health problems with non pure bred pekingese dogs?

Posted on February 23rd, 2010 by admin

I mean, of course every dog is different and things happen. But do all pekingese, or any breed of purebred/inbred dogs, suffer from the same health problems as those that aren’t?

Ok I know this has to be a trick question.

When you say non purebred Pekignese, are you then referring to any dog that happens to be a mutt?

Mutts have lots of diseases, more so then Purebreds from reputable breeders.

Reputable breeders only breed healthy dogs, thus strengthening the gene pool.

Mutt breeders do not really care about dogs, they are just trying to make money, not spend it on things like health tests.

Very good possibility and even more health problems. Exactly what is a ‘non pure bred Pekingese’?

Do you mean a mix/mutt? If so, yes as I said above.

    Purebred does not equal inbred.

Any dog can have health problems. Period.

WELL bred dogs will be less likely to have them, while POORLY bred dogs will be more likely to have them. Responsible breeders do genetic testing and ONLY breed the dogs that best meet standard, health, and temperament. Irresponsible breeders breed any dog for any reason.

Responsible breeders do not breed mutts or individuals that deviate from breed standard.

Hopefully you aren’t assuming purebred means inbred because it doesn’t. all pekes and any other purebred dogs can have the same health problems regardless of whether they are AKC registered or not. Purebred dogs coming from a puppy mill or a poor backyard breeder will no doubt have more problems than a purebred coming from a show background or a good backyard breeder (and there are many of them out there…breeding good dogs even if not showing them)

You mean if you found a pekingese dog off of craigs list or something and not from a reputable breeder?

Your best bet if you want to avoid major health problems is to buy from a very, very responsible breeder who’s done several genetic tests on their dogs.

They say mutts tend to be healthier and more robust but this isn’t necessarily true. Many mutts I’ve seen are the result of "accidental" breeding and not natural selection. These dogs may be just as prone to diseases as any other dog. You’re actually taking a bigger risk with them since their lines are…uncertain at best and no one really cared about genetic diseases when the parents were bred.

A good breeder of purebred dogs will have their animals tested for genetic disease before breeding them. It is safe to buy a purebred from a reputable source.

Bad breeding is bad breeding. If the parents are carriers for a genetic disorder, chances are it will be passed on to the puppies. It doesn’t matter what breed the parents are. It’s a myth that a mixed breed dog is automatically healthier than a purebred.

If you want a mix, go to a shelter or rescue. There are sure to be pekingese and pekingese crosses available in your area. http://www.petfinder.com is a good place to start.

Purebred pekes have a host of problems BUT at least breeders know what problems they can expect and then reputable breeders do appropriate testing to be sure the breeding stock is free from these diseases. Since a mix may bring in a host of other problems to the table…and the parents are usually not tested for the problems…mixed breeds Pekes are often more likely to have problems.

any dog can have problems and yes over the years they have got worse as some breeder breed far to close related dogs,if you get a puppy from a breeder that has had the parents vet checked and they are not close related then a pure bread dog is fine

They would still have some of the health traits of the pure bred and really the purebred Pekingese doesn’t really have any major health concerns. However because of its flat face though it can become heat stressed very quickly. Skin fold dermatitis around the face can be a problem also and it is recommended that the folds should be cleaned thoroughly every day. Other than that other health problems could arise from the other breed it has been mixed with.
