my 6 year old dog has been clearing her throat lately and sometimes coughing. I was unable to do any thing about it for the first few weeks due to my own illness. it seems to be getting worse. Today i noticed a rash like occurrence on her torso. Tomorrow its off to the vet we go! But i guess I am trying to prepare myself as much as possible.
A cough can be anything, including heart trouble, heartworm, or as simple as kennel cough.
As for your question on heartworm, look up the "slow kill method" of treating heartworm on the net. Basically, it involves giving a heartworm pill twice a month for 6 months.

If this is not kennel cough which is easily treated and it is heart worm depending on her health it can be treated it is painful and hard and some do not make it but with luck and love who knows! They do have treatment that takes a long period of time and care.
If she is not positive they have in expensive flea meds that help keep this from happening as well as a more effective and little costly heart worm pill. I wish you both the best. Thanks for taking and caring for her.

The vet is a good idea – and a blood test for heart worms !
In case your dog really has heart worms, there are several options to consider – arsenic OR the holistic way. I, myself, prefer the holistic aproach.

Is your dog not on preventative? Heartworms cause coughing in the later stages and the treatment your vet will probably give your dog is very expensive and very risky. Many times dogs do die from the treatment and the heartworms cause damage to the dogs’ heart. Preventative is much cheaper and easier on the dog and always works if the human is not too lazy to give it. I hope your poor dog does not have heartworms and is on preventative. There are plenty of other things that can cause coughing but they do need to be checked out.
