What are the symptoms of lime disease in dogs?
Posted on April 16th, 2010 by admin
I have found at least three tics on my black lab in the past couple of days and don’t know how long they were there. They were pretty swollen,I believe that I got all of it out when I removed it but I just want to make sure I keep an eye on her
Call the vets in your area and ask if they are carrying REVOLUTION yet..If they are, they are encourgaged by the maker to give the first treatment free. If the bite was recently, the REVOLUTION will keep your dog safe from Lyme’s disease..
It is just a spot-on liquid, applied to the skin on her shoulder/neck
Revolution also protects against heartworm, fleas, ticks, worms, and mites.

Lyme Disease in Dogs
…"Over 90 percent of canine patients were admitted with signs of limping (usually one foreleg), lymph node swelling in the affected limb, and a temperature of 103 degrees (101 to 102.5 degrees is normal). The limping usually progresses over three to four days from mild and barely noticeable to complete disuse of the painful leg. Once the dog starts to be affected by the bacteria, Lyme Disease can progress from a mild discomfort to the stage where a dog will be in such joint and muscle pain it will refuse to move; it is not uncommon for an owner to have to carry a sick dog into the animal hospital. Over the span of two or three days a dog can progress from normal to completely unable to walk due to generalized joint pain. In addition to joint damage, the bacteria can affect the dog’s heart muscle and nerve tissue. If the disease is diagnosed in time, treatment can cure the dog before permanent joint or nerve damage occurs."

Clinical illness usually occurs 2 to 5 months after initial exposure and the likelihood of disease and the severity of the disease seems to vary with the animal’s age and immune status. Cats can develop Lyme disease, but it occurs rarely in them, even in endemic areas. Other domestic animals such as horses have contracted Lyme disease, but it does not appear to be a significant problem. Dogs show several different forms of the disease, but by far, the most common symptoms are a fever of between 103 and 105°, shifting leg lameness, swelling in the joints, lethargy, inappetence, and maybe most importantly, response to appropriate antibiotics.
Arthritis may be a result of both short- and long-term infections. Most dogs that are promptly diagnosed and treated do not appear to develop arthritis, but a few dogs who do not respond completely to treatment or were not treated will develop progressive degeneration of the infected joints.
A few dogs have developed severe progressive renal disease as sequelae to Lyme disease. This severe kidney failure is non-responsive to treatment and death is often the outcome. Fortunately, this form appears to be rare.
Usually, dogs will not develop any rash or the circular area of redness around the bite (erythema migrans) which is seen in people.

Symptoms are…..
The first sign of Lyme disease is usually a growing skin lesion where the tick bit. There may also be fever, muscle and joint pain, headaches and other skin lesions. Without antibiotics early, the illness may involve the heart, nervous system, joints and other organs.

Our lab mix had no symptoms until one day she suddenly went lame in both front legs. Daily antibiotics for a month cleared it up. Have the vet do a lyme disease test (blood test) to be sure. I had a friend whose dog got Lyme disease and went on antibiotics but it wasn’t caught in time. Thousands of dollars in vet bills and medicines later the dog eventually died from multiple organ failures. Lyme disease isn’t something to play around with.

swollen joints, painful, lethargy. If in doubt take your dog to the vet and have some tests run and then vaccinate your dog for Lyme and start on a tick preventative
