how big/tall do maltese dogs grow?

Posted on April 10th, 2010 by admin

i really want a maltese pup! but i dont want it to be a big dog. i know these dogs are adorable and small. but how big/tall do they get?

I’ve never seen a BIG maltese, they usually get to be around
arm cradling size, you know, like you would carry a baby?
also, i’ve never seen a tall one, they have really short legs and lots of fur/hair. So to me they kinda look like dustmops with feet……lol.

Hi! They don’t grow very big at all. My Maltese grew to about 6kgs and 40cms long, about 30cms tall. she was beautiful, I had her for 16 years, you will enjoy your puppy very much!

It depends on a couple things, they have tea cup maltese and normal ones. Tea cups stay really small and a normal maltese is about 4 to 5 pounds, about the size of a football or a bag of flour. Make sure you read up on them before hand. They can have a problem with low blood sugar but it can be dealt with if you know what to look for and how to keep it from going into shock. Good luck.

Adult Maltese range from 3 to 12 lb, though breed standards, , call for weights between 4 and 10 lb.The American Kennel Club, calls for a weight that is ideally less than 7 lb with between 4 and 6 lb preferred.

    Height Wise: 7-9 inches.

Please focus more on the personality than the size. Keep in mind that they are hard to potty train, need lots attention and do not do good around aggression, it can make them aggressive toward you. They also need to be properly socialized. and can be quiet hyperactive and snappy.

I’ve seen sweet natured ones and really snappy ferocious ones.It depends on the owner and training. And the amount of attention they were given.

Good Luck on your new puppy!
