Yes. Maltese can …
Yes. Maltese can forget how to do their tricks if they are not practiced regularly. Even today, Misty and I go through her routine of tricks at least a couple times per week.

Is it possible for …
Is it possible for a dog (or a Maltese for that matter) to forget a trick or skill initially taught to him as a young pup of 3 months? For example if a pup learned to sit, stand, speak etc, and a couple weeks go by without having exercised any of those learned, will he have trouble doing it again after the 2-3 weeks of not having done them?

kkem08, we had a Maltese and she usually loved everybody. I have heard they can be wary of strangers but biting is pretty unheard of for the breed. They are exceptionally sweet little dogs.

Most Maltese do not …
Most Maltese do not particularily enjoy swimming. They will however swim for you a little bit if you are gentle, reassuring, and RIGHT WITH THEM AND ACCOMPANYING THEM AT ALL TIMES while in the water (pool or hot tub), but most Maltese dogs will immediately look for the quickest way to swim to the nearest exit to get out of the water. It’s just their nature as most Maltese dogs are not really water-loving dogs like labs or larger dogs.

Tear stains were …
Tear stains were somewhat of a problem when Misty was under one year old. But beginning with her second year, her tear stains pretty much vanished on their own. In Misty’s case, it’s probably genetics as Misty comes from high-end tear stain-free Maltese bloodlines. No matter, it still helps to wash your dog’s face daily with warm water followed by thoroughly drying the corner of her eyes with a dry kleenex.

When you teach your …
When you teach your Maltese “Bang” (lay down and play dead) you have to help guide him down on his side after giving him the command, then immediately give him a treat when he is laying down. Eventually he’ll get the idea that you want him to lay down when he hears the “Bang” command.
