As a puppy, any Maltese puppy should be quite easy to train regardless of whether you have a boy or a girl puppy. Just be sure to train with lots of praise and patience, and don’t expext too much too soon out of your young Maltese.

Does a female maltese and a male maltese puppy have any differences?

  3. mistymaltese Says:

    Yes, I have indeed …
Yes, I have indeed worked with Misty without treats. But the Maltese breed generally “expects” to be rewarded. Unlike most other breeds, most Maltese dogs feel betrayed and cheated when their positive behavior is not accompanied with a treat. In this regard, the treat is a positive reinforcement reminder to the dog that she has indeed done what she was supposed to do.

I see you have the treats in your hand, have you worked with her without immediate reinforcement? Do you use random reinforcement? In other words, will she work without food? In any event, given the fact that she is still a puppy – very impressive

Well, I dont’ really understand your question… What do you mean by famous? In movies? In the dog show ring? Misty is only famous on YouTube because we do not show her in dog shows. She is however “show quality” and comes from a high-end genetic lineage… Intelligence being one of her strong traits. Given that, the training is then up to the owner (to make her famous).

    Indeed, you are …
Indeed, you are absolutely correct. Although Misty cost almost as much as a car, here genetics are classified as “show quality.” But since showing dogs is both a passion and a lifestyle on behalf of the owner, Misty has alternatively settled in to her primary role as family pet and watch dog. Once in a while though, I’ll give Misty a full-treatment bath, blow-dry, and doll her up to perfection and take her to PetSmart and/or the Dog Park where she gets to be the star of her own little show.

Just wondering what makes Misty a show dog – if she is not shown.
Isn’t showing a dog what would make them a show dog. Perhaps you mean “Show Quality” as opposed to “Pet Quality”? I do commend you on her tricks, they are absolutely adorable as is Misty. You have definitely inspired me to work on tricks with my 3 year old Maltese “Gracie-Lu”!

Good! Keep on teaching. One new trick per week is a good rule of thumb for the Maltese breed.

Wow I wish my maltese would do all those tricks! I got my Maltese when he was 12wks old and by that time the only tricks he knew were fetch and sit. I’ve been trying to train him to roll over and play dead with not much success. He’s almost 16wks now… and I’m still patiently teaching him new tricks

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I am in France at the moment so professional training will unfortunately have to wait until January. Keep the videos coming they are interesting for people like me who are looking for inspiration as far as teaching the dog new tricks. Take care.

    The mother Maltese …
The mother Maltese is responsible for teaching her pups their first important lessons of socialization with other dogs. Problem is, when a Maltese pup is removed from her mother prematurely (before 14 weeks of age) behavior problems often develop. And when they do, it’s best to consult an expert dog trainer to correct the problem. Professional dog training does work and the results can often be remarkable as no dog is too old to learn new tricks or new behaviors.

does anyone have some advice on how to train my dog to get along with other dogs? I’ve been told to grab him by the scruff of the neck and shake and tell him no! but I refuse todo anything negative like that to my dog. If anyone has advice on how to positively train him to get along with other dogs it would be greatly appreciated. He is a one year old maltese named Cooper.

Teaching most dogs to perform tricks on command is best accomplished by using hand signals in conjunction with using voice commands. These hand signals are the visual cues that your dog will learn to understand and depend on to help process your verbal commands.

When you teach your Maltese “Bang” (lay down and play dead) you have to help guide him down on his side after giving him the command, then immediately give him a treat when he is laying down. Eventually he’ll get the idea that you want him to lay down when he hears the “Bang” command.
