Questions about buying a Maltese dogs?
Posted on March 1st, 2010 by admin
I want to buy a Maltese dog but I have a lot of specifics. For one I may want a puppy but I would not like to have a hard time with the potty training. Second, I am 15 and my parents want me to buy the dog to show I’m responsible. How much do they usually cost? Third, are they of a light temperament? As in are they hyper dogs or could my dog just sit in my lap for a while. Any other things you think I should know would be so much help. Thank you!
Well i have a maltese dog and she is pregnant with her first litter. I’m 16 years old and I have had this dog for 5 years. These dogs are highly intelligent and she is a very calm dog and loves to be cuddled and loved by people. She warms up to friends and family in about 2 seconds of them walking in the door. They dont shed and they are easy to train and take care of. I love my dogs so much my family is opening a dog kennel because of how much love I show for my two dogs.
I hope this helps your parents choice. Good luck. And i got mine for about 1500 but these days its around 800-1000

From a reputable breeder— at least $1000, maybe more.
From petfinder.com– $300 or less.

I would respectfully suggest you read a couple of books and watch some videos on raising and training dogs. Also, I recommend two TV shows, "The Dog Whisperer" with Cesar Millan on the National Geographic Channel, and "It’s Me or the Dog," with Victoria Stillwell, on Animal Planet. Both programs are very instructive and often deal with the issues you raise here. Good luck!
Purebred Maltese will set you back several hundred dollars. Estimated additional costs for the first year are $1,000 for vet, food, grooming, and supplies.
Maltese are yappy dogs, like the other dust-mop breeds.

If you want a puppy that is already housebroken, you’re going to need to get an older puppy or buy from a breeder who actually interacts and trains the puppies. The really good quality Maltese are about $1000 or more. You can buy from a BYB and pay a few hundred, but you usually end up paying for it in the end with surprise vet costs because problems arise in the dog when he/she is older. As for of a light temperament, I have never owned one personally, but it sounds like they are good temperament and are a nice lap dog.
If you have any younger brothers or sisters who roughhouse, and especially who are really young (we are talking younger than about age 8), you don’t want to get a small puppy. Small dogs have been hurt or killed because a toddler throws a temper tantrum and tosses the dog across the room or drops the dog and breaks a leg.
Grooming is the last issue. Unless you want to groom a fluffy cloud every day, have the groomer keep the dog in a "puppy cut."
