How often do you ask to pet dogs you don’t know?

Every time you see a dog? When you see one that you particularly like? Never?
I saw a lovely pit bull today. I asked to stroke him and was so obedient, sitting and giving me his paw. So sweet! Though god knows why its owner admitted it was a pit bull considering they are illegal here.
If it’s a Dobermann I know better than to attempt to pet it because a well bred Dobermann neither seeks nor wants attention from people outside its pack. That said I usually pause to admire a good example of the breed & usually to someone who has equal good taste to mine in owning such a fantastic breed.
As a rule of thumb unless I know the dog & that it likes attention, I keep my hands to myself & admire visually.

Every time I see a dog pretty much and if the owner doesn’t look creepy.

When a breed i like catches my eye so a few times a week
Today i came across a Beautiful samoyed and never having seen one i just had to ask if i could stroke him his coat was so soft and he was so well groomed

lol i guess trying to be daring or the person doesnt know?
i always ask before i try to pet a dog common courtesy and i dont know the dog.
if it looks unhealthy im not touching it, if it lunges to play or to bite i wont go near it.
i dont like dogs that cant settle down if the dog is acting calmly and doesnt seem timid i ask to pet.
today i petted a Rott and a pair of ridgebacks =] and some scruff mutt until the owner announced it was a chorkie….i walked away .
i always thank people after i visit with a dog

Pretty much every dog I see that isnt dragging its owner around…those I ignore.
)
I may not always pet the dogs I see, but I usually talk to them.
There was a guy sitting outside a restaurant the other day with an adorable JRT puppy…..it was wagging its tail so hard when I spoke to it, that I thought it was going to wiggle out of its skin.

Not much, actually. Unless I see a breed that I am particularly fond of and wish to own one in the future. That is when I usually ask to pet them and what their temperament is like.
It’s mostly Chaos that wants to see the other dogs, lol!

If it looks friendly and is showing an interest in me, I will pet it with the owners permission. If I am in a place where dogs are allowed, I usually have my dogs with me so I dont really pet the other dogs much-my hands are full
People always ask to pet my dog because she is "pretty" but a lot of people ask if she bites and then walk around us, giving us 10 feet of space lol

I rarely ever pet strange dogs unless they seem exceedingly friendly or really interest me. Then I will ask. Plus I am pretty shy.

If i see a nice dog i will admire it, i have no desire to pet it. God knows what its temperament is like and i would rather not risk it.

The only time I see other dogs is at the dog park, and I just pet them. I don’t ask, haha.

Rarely.
There are a lot of creepy people around here so I’d rather not ask, especially since I’m a young teenage girl that walks my dog alone lol :\……
But if the owner of a dog doesn’t seem too creepy I might ask. Or when I go on vacation to friendlier places I ask a lot more too. =)
But I’m really shy too.. I guess it just depends on my mood! Haha.

Never,I respect the person walking or holding the dog and I know I would’nt want people doing it to me..shelter dogs are different,,whenever I get a chance

I usually don’t pet other dogs but the ones I know well, as I usually don’t like other people petting my dog every three seconds… He’s socialized, he isn’t agressive, he’s well-trained, but it gets a bit sickening. However, ocasionally I do run and pet other dogs. Another day I met a lovely Smooth Collie, which happens to be MY breed. Of course, I threw myself to the chance of meeting him, because they are not exactly popular where I live. And suprise – he was incredibly sweet and frigging adorable.
I think we are usually drawn to OUR breeds LOL.

Very rarely unless it is a puppy. Some dogs are unpredictable and you can’t tell by looking at them and the owners will never admit it.

I have not asked to pet a dog since i was a little kid. i’m not 27. However i have ppl ask to pet my husky all the time. little kids love him because they say he looks like a wolf-lol

I usually don’t because I run into dogs when I have my 4 and it is too much hassle. If I want to check out a breed I ask if my dogs and I can approach, I wish everyone that had dogs would ask first.
There is a lady that is training a German Shepherd for therapy work near me and she always want someone with dogs to approach him and someone to pet him.

I do not like strangers messing with my dogs and in turn I show the same respect, I will admire the dog and comment on the dog,…But I am a firm believer of not pushing your luck….
I think it is only courtesy not to impose on another owners dogs.
I have petted other dogs with permission in the past, but I do not make it a habit of doing so.

Never. Ok, ok I will say once I asked to pet someone’s dog…it was an Italian Greyhound and I heard they felt like velvet so I HAD to get my hands on him. But otherwise I have no desire to pet other peoples dogs. Sometimes (*I think to myself*) I wish I could ask to take the leash and show them how to control their dogs. LOL. Very strange that person admitted to having a Pit…probably didn’t know they were considered illegal?

only once last year, and It was a bulldog at the vet’s office. I asked the owner for permission first, didn’t get all up it the dog’s face or anything. Just a good scratch on the head and back. The dog licked me on the cheek. lol! because I was kneeling down beside him. Anyway, I don’t pet anyone else’s dog(s), especially around this neighborhood. I just ignore them, nor do I let them pet any of mine. Bella is shy and doesn’t like to be stroked as much. Sasha could care less. Teensy wags her tail at every stranger. Taylor notices them but doesn’t care. We are about to move soon, so far, the new neighborhood has less stray dogs, so I can give them longer walks. I will still be on alert though. lol!
EDIT: I have a TD Stalker. lol! someone hates me and everyone else I guess!

Not too often to be honest.
If I see a nice looking Springer or any other dog I like the look of, I’ll ask if I can stroke it.
The last time I petted a ’strange’ dog was about 5 days ago, I was missing dog interaction and there were to Golden Retrievers at a service station, so I said hi.

If I ever feel the need to pet someone’s dog I always ask first, even if it’s at a dog show. My dog isn’t fond of strangers so it is a big pet peeve when people try to pet him without asking if it’s ok first. I usually don’t pet other people’s dogs unless it’s a breed I don’t see very often and they’re not in the middle of doing something.

After reading those stories about people being attacked by dogs that can be aggressive about touching him/her, I decided that i would always ask to pet a
dog. It’s also a habit for me to ask what type of dog and for some reason (I don’t know why) I always ask how old the dog is.

I am a dog lover and if somebode is busy with their dog i wont ask to and i wont ask if the dog is aggressive, growling or not in a decent energy.I will ask if the dog is in a good healthy mental state and the owner is not really busy doing anything with their dog (ex. agility, herding trials walks).If i see a dog that i am fond of i will ask to pet the animal and ask the owner questions about the breed.I love dogs so i geuss this wanting to pet a dog comes naturally to me.
