What is your description of a perfect pet dog? I like dogs with almost no defense instinct,?

very low prey instinct, but high pack instinct. Dogs smart enough to housebreak and learn basic obedience, but not so smart that they are easily bored. Low energy to medium energy is great. (High energy dogs are not my cup of tea at all.) I like low-shedding coats in dogs small enough for me to handle and walk easily, not so big that I can’t walk or control them. Gender or even look isn’t so important to me, but cute is fun too. Breed isn’t important or mix only that their temperament is stable and not hyper or aggressive. Good health is a plus, but I have always been willing to care for them regardless of health.
What is your idea of a perfect pet dog?
I don’t like a lot of prey drive means I don’t like dogs who chase things or kill things or chase ankles. Lots of pack drive simply means very pack oriented, love to please, love to be with the pack, doesn’t wander off doing it’s own thing.
I like smart, challenging dogs. I do not like high activity but do not want a couch potato. I like clever dogs who think for themselves and problem solve. I enjoy figuring out what makes a dog tick (I was recently sold a pup the breeder said "doesn’t really like to do anything that isn’t on his own agenda"… I simply ignored him until he figured out he wasn’t getting the cookies and praise everyone else were… he now tries to figure out what he can do to please me…. essentially just changing his agenda… another dog might have needed another tactic). Size is no issue for me. I like a stable temperament that KNOWS when its time to give the big BARK. I like dogs who don’t bark much. I like double coated dogs as I am less allergic to them than short coated dogs. I like dogs who WORK… who have a job and are good at it (even little dogs should have a job, even if its just to be pleasing without being yappy and nippy). I like dogs who get along well with others.

A Japanese Chin would fit all of your requirements for the perfect dog, except the shedding. They are not excessive shedders, but they are not non/low-shedding dogs. They are super loving and rarely do they bark. Some are very easy to house train, while I’ve heard of others that aren’t as easy. Mine was fairly easy. She has burst of energy, where she wants to run in circles and pester my cat. But it only lasts for a few minutes, then she wants to snuggle up in someone’s lap. She does not meet a stranger in man or animal. Plus, they are the cutest dogs in all the world!

Depends, but here are three examples to start with:
Protection dogs: Run Fast – Bite Hard
Catch dogs: Bite Hard – Hang On
Pet dogs: Hang Out – Don’t Bite

Of course, the ideal dog for anyone is a dog that suits that person’s personality and lifestyle.
I am a "doer" rather than a "viewer". Though on the verge of "senior citizenry", I can’t just sit around. I like to go for walks on on our crop farm and I compete in agility.
I like "dog dogs". Medium size, so I can pick up in case of an emergency. But would take large over small. Proportionally balanced. Athletic, sleek, energetic, agile. Biddable, wanting to work and do with and for me. Wanting to be trained and do a job. To me, this equals easy to train…if you know what you are doing!
Easy and well behaved in the house, but always ready to go.
I don’t use the word "prey drive"….it is too vague to me. Does it mean "intense" to moving objects, or wanting to chase and kill? High pack instinct? Does it mean wants to work for its human, or likes all dogs?

I like a dog who wants a job. Be it taking walks with you or fetch, or hunting or therapy. Whatever. A dog who desires to please and help you is so much fun to me. People do things all the time for their dogs, and I like a dog who wants to give back to the owner too.
Also, I like a dog with some prey drive. Not so much that they can’t control themselves, or are difficult for you to control. But some. I love playing fetch with my dog in high grass and watching her hunt for the ball. Tail wagging like crazy, determined to find it. Sometimes she’ll give up after a while, but she always tries. And if I tell her to try again, she will.
I want a dog with an "off switch" though. I want a dog who can chill out when it’s in the house.
A tough dog. Not one who is easily injured or fragile.
