Can dogs get sick from being in the cold for too long?

Posted on February 13th, 2010 by admin

Now that its winter, i obviously can’t have her outside for her potty breaks for too long, huh? But anyway can dogs get sick like us from being in the cold?

Well, not sick, but they can get hypothermia and frostbite if they are not used to the cold or have a thin hair coat. And toy breeds like Chihuahuas and Min Pins can’t last long in the cold at all.The same is true for very yong puppies and elderly dogs. But just a potty break isn’t going to do anything, and the dog wil let you know when it wants to go in ( it will shiver, lift it’s feet, etc.)

Depends on the dog. Some dogs with double coats don’t mind being out in the cold. My dog which is a shepherd/malamute mix, will stay outside all day if I let him. He doesn’t mind the cold at all, however, a dog without a double coat would probably not enjoy being out for long periods of time with out some kind of sweater or coat.

no one gets sick from being in the cold…but just like us they can suffer from hypothermia, frost bit, freeze to death. colds and the flu are an airborne virus.

Dogs nor people get sick from the cold. The problems is that bacteria and viruses survive better in colder weather and because people are indoors more during the winter months, colds spread faster and there is more recirculated air that during the warm months where we keep windows open. The only time the cold weather itself could be bad for your health is if you or your dog had an underlying health problem wherein the cold weather exacerbated it. But, again, cold weather doesn’t make you sick.

Depends on the dog. My 3 pound smooth coat Chi will not go outside if temp is lower than 50 or so. We use pee pads in the house, so no problem. My daughter’s dog is a Sheltie Pom mix and has a double coat and loves to be out in the cold.

Yes, please don’t leave your Chihuahuas, Yorkies and some other short hair breed dog out in the cold. Although some have an undercoat(Huskies) and can handle cold temps, others don’t and you risk them getting frostbite, pneumonia and death!. A Yorkie for instance would die because he doesn’t have an undercoat. Their hair is much like ours. Please people be pet smart and think before you leave your dog outside.

Yes…but not directly from the cold. They can get hypothermia, which will lower they’re immune system and leave them susceptible to illnesses.

If they’re body temp gets to low for to long of a time, they’re blood flow will be redirected to it’s main organs and can go into shock and then death.
