Does drinking Muddy Water make dogs sick?

I see dogs drinking muddy water at the park all the time. Can this make them sick? How about muddy tennis balls? Have you ever known any dogs that get sick from drinking muddy water? What kind of disease?
My dog got a nasty bacteria from drinking out of a water puddle. he has diarreah for a week or so and I decided to take him into the Vet. They tested his stool and confirmed it. It tooks several rounds of meds as it was a fast moving bacteria and my poor guy lost 10 pounds before it was out of his system! VACCINES have nothing to do with a bacterial infection. The Vet said they can get it from lakes, the beach, etc. Nothing serious of treated:)

Yes drinking dirty water can make them sick. They can get giardia from contaminated water.

no not if he has all his shots, plus dogs don’t get sick like us there could be human sicknesses in there but the dog can get them so hes perfectly fine don’t worry

Suppose it theoretically could but all or most dogs do it sometimes. My Jack Russell is obssessed with tennis Balls and we have never had a problem with them being muddy.
Tip – when they get muddy wash them under a running tap and then bounce them a couple of times outside, gets them almost dry, just like a wet dog shaking the rain off.

It is much harder for dogs to get sick from muddy water than for humans to because dogs usually drink any water they see and they build up a tollerance. Yes, dogs can get sick from it. My puppy used to get sick alot until he learned "no paws" or the human equivalent of dont touch. Also, a dog’s saliva is much more acidic than ours, so it kills more bacteria.

It’s not necessarily the mud, but any other bacteria or parasite that may be in the water. Dogs can get leptospirosis from drinking from puddles that contains urine of infected animals- other dogs, cats, moles, deer, cattle–can all be possible carriers. Giardia also can be spread by drinking water infected with the parasite.
Just to be on the safe side, carry a water bottle with you, and try to keep the dogs from drinking from puddles and streams.
